About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Vanessa, Well said about how to use graphic organizers. They help the students to see the segments as well as the whole when learning new information and skills. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Vanessa, You make several very good points but your last sentence is right on in terms of how to engage your adult learners and have them use their life experiences. I use case studies a lot in my classes because it helps students to develop their critical thinking skills while letting them apply their life experiences to the cases. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Vanessa, Good comments about how you can do your instructional planning by having this information and using it to customize your delivery selection. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Vanessa, All of these various aspects of knowledge and skill acquisition contribute to student learning and career growth. This is why we need to learn all we can about the learning process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Becky, Trust, respect and rapport are three elements of connecting with students and creating a learning environment that benefits everyone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jennifer, The more examples that you can provide the more you increase the value of the course to the students. When they see relevance and application they see the ROI of why they are taking the course. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Becky, Students really perk up when they have stories from the field shared with them as you have experienced. These stories help to make the content come alive and have application to their careers. Keep up the sharing! Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lee-Ellen, Like the way you "read" your students and then target your instruction to meet the needs of your current students. Each time a course is taught it needs to be customized after getting a reading of the students. As we know no two classes are ever the same. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Lee-Ellen, Good way to create a connection between your courses for your students. This way they see how the knowledge and skills they are acquiring build toward the next course and the next all leading to graduation and career success. Having this information helps them to see the ROI of why they are taking the courses they are. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, Well said and so true. Planning is the foundation for success as we know but it is surprising how many instructors do not plan well and as a result they try to just ad lib their way through classes. Doesn't take long for them to become frustrated because they do not have the respect of their students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
