About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Peggy, Right you are. Starting the development of two way respect goes a long way in setting the stage for a beneficial class for students. A positive first impression is the foundation upon which the rest of the class is built. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Angela, Good point about how the environment impacts the learning of students. We need to make sure the environment is supportive and does not distract from what is being taught. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nieva, Good examples of how to engage students in the learning process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, I agree and like this way of sharing the day's objectives and activities with students. I think this method gets their attention and helps them to focus on the contents of the class for that day. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ray, You are on the right track with your approach. As for suggestions for enhancing engagement by students it is an ongoing process for sure. Keep trying new and different approaches and then select those examples, activities and/or projects that work the best and use them while continuing to refine them in way that will keep the focus of your students. If you continue to bring your passion for your field and enthusiasm for teaching it you will do a lot to keep the interest of your students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Angela, What are the ways you do this? Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, This is a great approach to show your students the value of effective communication, both oral and written. You are making English have value to your students with these assignments. This will help them to see that effective communication is one of the keys needed for career success no matter the field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
David, This is how professional development occurs. The most effective way to expand your instructional delivery is to pick one area just as you have done and then set specific goals for how you are going to improve that area. Once you are comfortable with that area then move to another and then another. Before long you will have a greatly expanded skill set and be a master teacher as well. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bernie, This is one of those situations where it is better to slow down so you can speed up. Today's generation think all of life's problems can be solved with a google search. As we doesn't happen. Stopping and thinking through alternatives will yield much better results. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Benson, You had a great trainer and I am sure that is why you are successful today in leading your students toward reflective problem solving. This is how growth is achieve--questioning all the possibilities. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
