About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Baneet, I use role playing and case studies a lot in my classes to achieve the outcomes you are talking about. Getting the students to walk through different situations and then proposing solutions to the problems presented in the situations gives them valuable insight as to how they will need to conduct themselves once they are in the field. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kelly, Guest speakers are great for adding credibility to what you are teaching. They are motivators as well because the students get to see and listen to individuals that are making it in their field so they start to see themselves in the same light as these guest speakers. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tommy, Very true. They feel a part of the learning community and are more willing to be a part of class discussions. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, Thank you sharing this example with us. You kept seeking a solution to support the learning needs of your students and you found it. This enabled them to move forward and you to feel good about the progress these students made. A win win for all. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Ana, Thanks for sharing this great idea with us. Something as simple as this has such a powerful impact on both the minds and bodies of the students. You are helping them to reset their brains and be able to settled into the upcoming class session. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Tommy, Yes it is for the reasons you state. The human factor is what will keep many students in school and moving forward in their career development without they would be gone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Kelly, This is such a great way to provide student support. Your students are being provided the tools they need for success and in return they need to use these tools and put forth the needed effort that will help them have success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Arturo, Yes it will because you will be able to customize your instructional delivery to meet their needs in a supportive way. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Mark, Like your style in terms of demonstrating your concern for student success. This student benefited greatly from your effort to follow up and encourage him to be in class. He showed and he passed. It is amazing how attendance in class and doing the course requirements can impact a student's grade. When one of my challenging students starts to attend and does the work and his or her grades go up they start to figure out that this is what success is all about. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Nichelle, You are most welcome. You have a great attitude about the impact you are making on the lives of your students. By being consistent in your expectations and sharing them with your students in a way that reduces misunderstandings and confusion helps to move the students in their career development. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
