About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Paula, Good way to support them early and then let them grow from there. Much like learning to ride a bike. You are there like a set of training wheels when needed but also removing those wheels when it is time to go it alone. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Candace, Personal discipline is essential if a person is going to develop into a critical thinker. So many students today do not want to invest in themselves and acquire the self discipline needed yet want the same results as those that have developed this form of discipline. They need to see how important self discipline is to their career success. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Candace, Much like learning other things so procedures and processes can be difficult at first but once internalized they become easier to use. You are helping your students to acquire such a model and then make it a part of their problem solving process. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jessica, Like this approach and incentive. You are helping them be successful by showing them how ongoing effort and preparation can and will pay off. Thanks for sharing this idea with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
William, This is a great form of pretesting your students. You are observing them in a setting where there is little or no pressure and they can work at their own pace. What you learn gives you insight in how to work with these students for the duration of the class. Thanks for sharing this idea with us. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Jon, Well said and the reason why we need to work hard at making a positive first impression each time we start a new class of students. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bobbi, This is an important part of the teaching process. Setting a positive tone for the class and giving students opportunities to connect their previous life experiences with the content being offered will help them to see the value of being in attendance and contributing to the class. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Judy, We need to see our teaching environments through the eyes of our students. When we do we will know we have the environment right or we need to make changes that will make the setting comfortable and supportive. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Bobbi, The use of personal devices in classroom continue to be challenges for instructors. The key is to be consistent in the enforcement of your policy about such devices. That way the students will adjust their behavior to what your policy is and then the class and proceed. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
Beverly, Like the way you have laid out this path for your students to follow as they develop their problem solving skills. This way they will know how to collect information, analyze possible solutions and then come up with an answer to the presenting problem. Gary Gary Meers, Ed.D.
