About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Lydia, This is a good idea because as you say many of the questions are being thought of by other students as well. So you can group the questions together and be more efficient in your responses. Gary
Hi Stephen, This is why it is so important to integrate different approaches as you have seen with your son. Creating multiple connections (mind-body) helps with retention, motivation and application. Gary

Hi Melanie, Good approach. The key is what you mentioned repetition. Good communication skills are so important if you can get them ingrained into the minds and abilities of students you will be doing their careers a great service. Gary
Hi Craig, This is a great way to help the students to see value from what is going to occur in the coming course. These real life examples of situations that you have encountered help the students to make a connection between you and them and accounting and their studies. Gary

Hi Carol, So true. They really like examples of what has happened to you the instructor as well as how you handled the situation. With all of your experience you have enough stories to last 3 lifetimes of teaching so continue to share those stories and motivate your students. Gary

Hi Matthew, Good question, not sure I have a response that addresses strategies. We are still working on some techniques that will help in this area but they are in the field testing stage of development. Will have further information coming. Gary

Hi Matthew, I like the way you introduce the value of what you are teaching. The taking away of one application opportunity each time the class meets really helps with relevancy. I am sure this makes teaching much easier for you. Gary

Hi Jammie, I admire you for your willingness to benefit from student feedback through instructional improvement in spite of the pressure the faculty faces with the incentive bonuses. I know this makes it hard to be creative and try new things with students because you don't know how they will turn out until after you have tried them. Keep up your effort to be an effective instructor because this is reflective of your dedication and professionalism as an educator. Gary

Hi Lydia, This is a good point. Students think they are the first ones to be stressed, frighten, and worried about being successful in college. Once they find out that it is common for everyone, including their instructors, to feel this way they start to settle down and look for how they can be successful in the course. This is why it is important for them to see the instructor as a human and to realize that all instructors are former students themselves so they have been where they are and understand what they are going through.
