About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi All, Your different definitions of professionalism all encompass your dedication to your field and your students. This is what being a professional educator is all about. Great job of showing how each of you is going to impact the lives of your students. Gary
Hi Carla, Great advice for every instructor to follow. I get excited about teaching just reading your comments. We do have great jobs in addition to the responsibility we carry as a result of being instructor. We impact lives and we can never forget that. Gary
Hi Lucy, Good responses to the posed question. This is how you get students to settle into the course and feel like they can be successful. Gary
Hi Annie, Thanks for sharing this great but simple answer to test anxiety. Every instructor can use something like this to help students out. The more strategies like this that we know about the better we are going to be able to meet the needs of our students. Gary
Hi Jocelyn, I haven't taught anything like clinical but what I do with my required class is to make a game of the introductions and icebreaker. Take clinical terms and have the students play a game like Bingo with them. Do a matching game with the students moving around the class and talking with other students to get the answers to their needed matches. Be creative in getting the students talking with each other, using the content they have been studying and refresh in their minds why they are in the clinical course. Gary
Hi Kemlyn, Good strategy in terms of getting the students comfortable with each other. This way they can share the different aspects of the course and feel welcome in doing it. This really helps to get them settled into the course. Gary
Hi Dalene, Well said about creating an welcoming environment for students. Your example of your own instructors in your Masters program serves to reinforce how important this is on all levels. Gary
Hi Joe, I agree. Social interaction and emotional involvement is a part of our jobs no matter what we do. By letting your students share their life experiences with the other students you are giving each student respect and something to talk with the other students about. The is also the start of the development of respect and rapport which can grow throughout the course. Gary
Hi Parthenia, As a new instructor I know you are planning your instructional deliveries so you can have a dynamic impact on your students. What are some ways you are using to get your classes off to a good start? Thanks in advance for your input. Gary
Hi Ann, What are some of the ways you have used that resulted in good student engagement and effective learning? Thanks. Gary
