I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Sherry, Congratulations on making your course content relevant and real. I am sure your students enjoyed talking about the Black Friday ads and how they impacted the buying public. Now on to Cyber Monday. Gary
Hi Jonathan, Well said. Gary
Hi Jonathan, Good choice of a word. I think we fulfill this term in a lot of what we do because we are "coaching" them as they prepare to enter the big game (work world) and be successful. Gary
Hi Jonathan, Thank you for these good points. Instructors need to "own" the classroom and they can do that by moving around and focusing on different students. This really helps to keep the dynamics of the class working for effective learning. Gary
Hi Cynthia, Thank you for sharing a number of very effective learning strategies. These methods can be used by instructors in many different settings and with diverse learning groups. Gary
Hi Jonathan, Good advice that we all need to heed. I teach two sections of the same course back to back. So I need to remain excited and fresh throughout the semester as well as throughout the each class section. I work hard at this because I want each class to feel that I am speaking to them and that my content is tailored to their learning needs. Gary
Hi Peggy, Good point about sharing information that shows the students that you understand where they are coming from. We all are former students ourselves, even if our students don't believe it. So we do understand their situations and are there to be supportive and help them be successful if they will put forth the effort. Gary
Hi Peggy, Thank you for this good advice for how to start a new class off in the right direction. Be clear, specific, organized and ready to present and you will have laid the foundation for making a good first impression on the students. Gary
Hi Cynthia, This is what professional development is all about. We need to continually seek new information, strategies and input to keep our skills developing so we can be more effective instructors. Gary
Hi Tamara, Good point. We need to know the causes so we can create the interventions. By displaying the human factor and keeping our students engaged in the learning process we are going to be able to understand them better and create supports that will help to reduce their school leaving. Gary
