About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Donte, Well said. Clear expectations and guidelines help to reduce confusion and frustration. With a clear understanding about the course the students can move forward with the content knowing what to expect from the professor and themselves. Gary
Hi Theresa, Well put on all points. This is what a professional looks and acts like. You are setting the bar for them so they can see how they need to conduct themselves if they are going to be accepted as a professional. Gary
Hi Theresa, I teach a required course as well. My students have to take and pass the course or they cannot receive state certification. This presents some challenges because of student attitudes but I enjoy teaching the course anyway. I get to be creative, use a variety of activities like you have mentioned and it is fun to see how they start to become engaged in the course and realize that what I am teaching can actually be helpful. Imagine that in a required course! Gary
Hi Theresa, Good planning and approach. You are setting the stage in the classroom/lab so the students will see and know what to expect as they move out into the work world. This way you are reducing the trauma they will experience as they sit for exams and work through the certification process. Gary
Hi Ken, Yes, it is. I teach a general required course and my students are there because they have to be. I take this as a challenge and try to draw each one of them into the course and show them how what I teach can be of benefit to them in the future. This makes teaching fun because I get to be creative in my delivery while enjoying their growth in the course content. Gary
Hi Nancy, Students love to hear stories from the field so sharing your career experiences with them is a good thing to do. Just make sure that you don't ramble and that you select a story that has direct application to the topic being discussed. This way you will be reinforcing the content with the students through the story. Gary
