About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Niles, This is a good idea. Sometimes in the rush of everything students forget they have people who are there for them. By reminding them you can reduce some of their anxiety and help them to focus on the course. Gary
Hi Edwardo, Good way to target your instruction. By knowing their learning preferences you can customize your delivery and increase student engagement. Gary
Hi Jim, Two good strategies. As you know from your practice much of what you do in medicine in treating animals is to use your problem solving skills since your patients can't talk to you. I run a ranch and there are many times I wish one of my horses or mules could tell exactly what the problem is. The other aspect of your instructional effort is the sharing of your career experiences. By combining their problem solving with career experiences the students get to see the problem and then hear a solution. Gary
Hi Sara, This is true for getting a class off to a good start. The students appreciate and respect a leader in the classroom that has the experience and dedication to take them on a learning journey. Gary
Hi Destiny, Good point. The key is to help the students to see the value of what they are learning and how it will help them achieve their career goals. Gary
Hi Shametra, Good strategy. This helps the content to be both relevant and applicable. Gary
Hi Linda, Good strategies for keeping the students engaged. I am sure your students enjoy the games for test review. I know students really look forward to these opportunities to share what they know. Gary
Hi Gene, Good connection between the establishment of a positive learning environment and the student connection. By knowing more about each other respect and rapport can be developed to the advantage of everyone. Gary
Hi Emilie, Good point about understanding the directions and information your students needs. By knowing the backgrounds they bring to the class you can more accurately target the information you are sharing with them. This results in less confusion, frustration, and more focused effort. Gary
Hi David, Thanks for sharing this story. I really like hearing stories like this. It shows with some effort, caring and effort success can be achieved. You have a successful student that I am sure is grateful that you helped her in her class so she could achieve her career goals. Gary
