About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Ellory, Great approach! You are really helping your students to see the connection between your course and their career choices. This is what they need to see when they are taking courses that they can't see the direct application for. Gary
Hi BJ, I think this is a very "responsible for their own learning" type of approach. They are going to be more invested in the instructional process because they are making the content selection. Gary
Hi Galina, Thank you for the comprehensive definition of rapport. You have done a great job of explaining why instructors need to strive to establish rapport with their students. The benefits are great and help to make the learning process just that more enjoyable. Gary
Hi Danielle, These if explained carefully to the students can be excellent instructional supports. Because as you say they know where they are in relation to knowing or not knowing the content. Gary
Hi Cheryl, This is so important because it lays the foundation for respect which leads to rapport and more engaged students. A win win for everyone. Gary
Hi Sandra, All good points. Thank you for sharing them with us. I want to reinforce your point about the real world. So many of our students are not ready for the real world when they complete their studies. They need extensive experience in transferring their skills from the classroom to the work world. Gary
Hi Rachelle, I agree with you about the need to set up the labs in a real world way. This will ease the transition for students into the work world. Also, this helps them to develop their coping skills as they will be solving problems in the lab and then upon graduation in the real world. They need all the experience they can get. Gary
Hi Kevin, I like to give my students guided notes that follow the PP. This way they can concentrate on the PP slides and complete the guided notes without having to write everything down. Without guided notes the students feel like they are in a race to write everything down before the instructor goes to the next slide. With guided notes the key points are listed and they fill in the supporting information as I go through the lecture. Gary
Hi Rudy, These are all great ideas for making your course content become real and relevant. Sounds like a fun course for both your students and yourself. Gary
Hi Galina, Yes, they do measure their instructors against the role models of the field. This is why we must always reflect that model. Gary
