About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Rachael, Thank you for sharing this strategy with us. It is a great way to reduce confusion and student frustration. You have it laid out clearly so there isn't any discussion in relation to is the content appropriate. You have set a percent level and they can use it as the guide. Gary
Hi Jeff, Good saying to use when planning instruction. This way you will plan your instruction to have a more long term effect on the education of your students. Gary
Hi Vanessa, Good point about how to keep the motivation level up for students that you have over several courses. You are building on the knowledge you have about them more in each new course. This is a great way to earn their respect and establish rapport. Gary
Hi Debra, This is a mutual effort and exchange of information. This really helps with the development of respect and rapport with students. Gary
Hi Jean, Right you are. This sets the stage for the rest of the course and the students leave that day with a clear idea of what it takes to be successful in the course. Gary
Hi Rachael, Good way to show your students through stories and examples how they can be successful in your class. You are doing them a real service because I am sure many of them don't know how to maximize their learning opportunities. By knowing you are supportive of their efforts you are showing them what a professional should be like. Gary
Hi Nathan, Good point about Type A's and how they approach a classroom. Being one, I had to work very hard to program into my approach and mindset flexibility. Once I got comfortable with the concept and started applying it life got a lot easier for me. I wish you much teaching success as you incorporate flexibility into each class session. Gary
Hi Sherrie, This is value added teaching. You are helping your students to make a connection between what they are learning in class and how they can use the knowledge to make their own lives better. This is a connection that will pay dividends for years to come. Gary
Hi Aprilyn, This approach is essential as they are developing their soft skills as well as the specific skills of the field. This way they will enter their career area knowing that they need to always act like professionals when dealing with patients and other health care individuals. Gary
Hi David, Good point about giving student feedback. The reason for testing is to try and determine what students have learned. By giving feedback you are helping them to learn even more and they will be able to perform at a higher level on the next quiz. Gary
