About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Anton, Glad you like the idea and hope you can jot down some great new ideas for improved and expanded instruction. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
James, Good to hear about how the change of instructional pace is keeping students engaged. As you know students need variety in order to stay engaged so by getting them up and moving for the lab. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Karen, Right you are about how the lack of instructor connection can be a major draw back to student involvement. This is why developing rapport is so important. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carolyn, Good way to get the course off to a good start because as you know the students are nervous about starting a new course and seeing what it takes to be successful. The more you can show them a success trail the greater comfort they are going to have with the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Joseph, With this concern I would review the lesson plans and strive to make sure that I am presenting the essential key concepts that the students need to have to be successful. Once that is done then you can add in the supporting information that supports the core concepts. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mark, I use this method as well with my adult students. They like to share their life experiences as you know which helps build their confidence since many of them may not have been in school for a long time. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Cynthia, Good to hear the value you have received from the course. I wish you continued teaching success with your understanding of the impact the environment on learning. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Amber, The key to successful teaching and learning is to build personal connections with the content. You are doing that with this approach. Your students get to see the value of this information in relation to their personal lives. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Kathleen, Great advice for all instructors. Trying new things is what keeps the excitement level up for both the instructor and the students plus it lets instructors use their creativity. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Margeaux, I use problem solving and case studies to show students the need for the content I am sharing with them and then we explore the critical concepts they need to have be successful. This way we build from the ground up and not from the top down. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
