About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Ali, Good way to build a connection between the course content and application. Through their studies they will see the quotes or questions they need to bring to the class for further discussion. This shows them relevancy and value to what is being taught. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Shannon, Jeopardy works well for me. I use a variation of Family Feud as well. This puts four people against four people so I am involving more people at one time. My variation is "Content Feud--Do you know your stuff?". Another thing I do is to have the students come up with some study/review strategies that they think will work with the class. These can be a lot of fun as well as effective. Be creative and change things up. You will quickly see what works best with your students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Marilyn, Good point and one I follow myself. Knowing that I am organized and have planned out my instruction lets me relax and really enjoy my teaching and the students so much more. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nathaniel, I like where you are coming from. We are models for our profession and we cannot let our standards slip. To do so is to cheat the students of the true value of our courses. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rebecca, You got that right. I had some of those types of professors in my educational experiences. Thought each class session would never end. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, Good way to bring the students into the discussions since they know that you will be calling on them if at first they don't jump into the discussion. Either way input is being sought by you. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rebecca, A well balanced approach to teaching success. These methods will keep students engaged and focused. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michael, I like your B's they say it all. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Robert, Good strategy. These graphic organizers help them to see both the segments as well as the completed product. By being able to segment their steps the students will enhance their chances of being successful at the end. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gary, For sure. That is how I learned my craft and it has carried me through my career. Having both the knowledge and skills gives me a lot of confidence when faced with a challenge and this is the same for our students. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
