About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Beverly , See you were already doing something great for your students and didn't even know it, yet it was successful. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Allinda, Good point and one we instructors need to keep in mind. We need to be on the look out for the motivators that reach each student. It is always great when you find that for a student and see how he/she thrives on it and is successful in the class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nathaniel, Right you are. Simple yet powerful. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Shelia, Your last sentence really says it all for adult learners. They need to know that they have access to their instructor and that their instructor is there to help them be successful if they will put forth the effort. This really gets them excited about the course and their own career success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rebecca, Yes - yes. Successful grads make powerful impacts on the students. They can see themselves in those graduates. I use them a lot in my classes for the reasons you stated. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Discussion Comment
Dr. Carlton, I agree. I solicit feedback from my students informally through 3 by 5 cards I give out and have them comment on the value they got from an assignment, reading or activity. This way I can continue to improve my delivery and enhance their learning. A win win for everyone. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nathaniel, Right you are about the excitement factor. Yes, we are edutainers in many ways. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Nathaniel, Coming from a challenging background myself I appreciate your comments and understand your passion for helping your students be successful. You are a role model for them to the point that they know you know the excuses they will give mean they are only trying to blow something by you rather than appreciating the gift of learning you are giving them. Keep being the role model you are and continue impacting the lives of your students. The pay off is tremendous as you know. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Dr. Carlton, For adult learners as you know the "safe" environment in terms of being able to take risks and even have failures is so important. We are their safety net and they need to know that as the class begins. If they are willing to put forth the effort we will help them to be successful. This is a supportive environment that brings success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Shirley, Great strategies! You are offering variety and change of pace both of which are critical in keeping students engaged. Thanks for sharing these ideas with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
