About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Issy, Great attitude. Your excitement is catching. I am sure this spreads into the class as well. Being in a dynamic field gives you more than enough content to each course. Change is a constant in your industry that is for sure. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Timothy, That is why it is so important to "read" each student and class. By knowing your students you will be able to customize your instruction to the point that you will keep the students engaged and focused on their success. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Gina, This is so important in helping students to feel a part of the class. Struggling students may feel they have no future in the class and when you stop to talk with them and give some words of encouragement you are reinforcing the fact you think they can be successful. This is a powerful motivator. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
FARZANA, Introductions start the development of respect and rapport for everyone. It is a two way street in terms of giving and receiving respect for what is being done in the course and the value associated with the content. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
FARZANA, Good for you. This makes the content both valuable as well as relevant. Especially in a course like math where the students are often not the most excited about being there in the first place. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Daniel, All good strategies to follow in helping the students to get ready for their careers. They need to have models available to them so they can see the value associated with being a contributing member of the workforce. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
RAJINI, All good strategies for reinforcing the students and their learning. By interacting with the students both as a group and individually you are able to help them be successful throughout the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Rory, Instructors play a number of different roles throughout a course. We need to be aware when our students need encouragement, support and mentoring. All of these roles help our students move closer to their career goals. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tom, All of these methods help to drive home to the students the fact they are gaining skills and knowledge that will help them achieve their career goals. They need to be reminded of this ever so often when they get worn down and discouraged. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Diane, Good point about revisiting and refocusing our content. We need to make sure that our students understand and can apply what we are teaching them. This is what good teaching is all about. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
