About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Roderick, I agree. When you provide them with opportunities to apply what they are learning you are showing them relevance to the course content. As you say application and relevance are both good motivators. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Michael, This is a great definition of professionalism that every instructor needs to read and follow. This is what being a model for the profession is all about. Thank you for sharing it with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Stacey, You made me smile when I read your comments. I think for the most part that students think that their instructors have never had any life or experience prior to them coming into the classroom. When they hear about the experiences that their instructors have had they can't believe it. So go ahead and share your stories with them as you reinforce the fact that you are qualified to be teaching the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Discussion Comment
Deshannon, You make a good point about stopping and really focusing on how what the students are saying both verbally and non-verbally. This can be valuable feedback on how you need to adjust your instructional delivery. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Carolyn, Good advice for all instructors to follow. Stop and consider what is going on and how to regroup and then move forward. Thanks for sharing this with us. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Esra, Right you are about the instructor setting the tone. If you aren't excited about the content and being there it is for sure the students won't be. I am always surprised at negative instructors that can't figure out why students don't like their courses when all they do is complain or whine. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Stacey, You have a great background for where you are teaching now. You know how to adapt your instruction to meet the individual learning needs that exist in your classes. This is so valuable to your students even if some of them don't realize it. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jennifer, I commend you for providing this resource to your student. By making them aware of this support and doing an introduction I know you are keeping in school students that would let life overwhelm them to they point they would quit. You are impacting lives through your efforts. Keep up the good work. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Katherine, If you use an outline for your lecture or notes put in some cues to yourself to pause, take a deep breath, ask a question or do an activity. This will help you to slow down plus it gives the students a chance to refocus their brains a little. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Brandy, By being open and clear about course requirements, expectations and assignments you are creating a solid foundation for the course. It is a building process from there on. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
