About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Dr. Wilson, You hit upon a critical point. We need to listen to our students. If we listen as you know we can learn so much in terms of how to support their learning efforts and career development. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tom, This is a tremendous resource for your students. The guide you are providing helps them to make progress in their learning if they are willing to put forth the effort required. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Sabina, I like the approach you are taking with your courses. Your students are leaving with expanded knowledge and skill sets. Their ROI is that they can apply their new knowledge and skills in different settings with positive results. This is a win win for everyone. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Taunya, Good strategy. The more variety and application opportunities you provide your students the more they will be engaged in the learning process. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Mark, If you set a comfortable and relaxed tone through an ice breaker you then can have them introduce themselves and they won't be so nervous. My ice breakers are fun and involve a lot of laughter and that really gets the students settled into the course. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tammy, I can't imagine working with a recycled syllabus. I think you would spend more time explaining why it isn't accurate than you would telling the students about the upcoming course activities. I use certain core things in my syllabus, such as safety issues, etc. from previous syllabi but the rest of it is targeted to that group of students. It is my way of customizing my instruction to them. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Ghazanfar, Right you are. A well prepared syllabus gives a clear and concise picture of what is going to happen in the upcoming class sessions as well as the expectations, requirements and polices. This reduces student concerns since they are informed through the syllabus. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Tahiddie, For sure. If we don't bring it, it isn't going to happen. We all have had an instructor that did not want to be in the classroom and we know how we felt going to class. We need to bring excitement and dedication to the learning site each time we hold class. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
Jon, Good strategies for professional development. It is an ongoing process that we are all involved in if we are dedicated to our students and effective instructional delivery. Gary Dr. Gary Meers
