Hi David: Your approach to choosing what'll work best sedems very logical and systematic. That's great. I think that when I'm writing for planning purposes, I follow something similar. On the other hand, I've stumbled on to wonderful lessons, topics, methods, and uses for media resources literally by accident. Sometimes being open to students suggestions can be quite helpful. Example, years ago while trying to describe a lower lobe pneumonia on a chest x-ray, some of the students in the class couldn't see what I was trying to identify. A suggestion came from a student to project the x-ray image… >>>

Hi Louis: I think peer assistance, tutorials, remediation, even discussion groups are very helpful beccause of the peer-to-peer comfoprt zone that is inherently present in these assistive sessions. I think there may be some role modeling that occurs when better students are able to help weaker students too. Regards, Barry

Hi Frank: You're right, it is a combination of both content and style. And the thing is, we all have our unique style to bring. My version of enthusiasm may be diiferent than yours, but we both bring that to the classroom. Being approachable, friendly, showing concern, being helpful, these traits any teacher can provide in their own style and in doing so, make the class better. More patience, tolerance of opposing positions, and being honest and genuine with students are some of the more effective traits, but often are more difficult to exhibit because we're all so busy, time… >>>

Hi Frank: Hopefully, students will check their grades when it's so convenient to do so. Most students find they enjoy looking at their progress in "real time". Even so, I don't think this should substitute for planning frequent personal connections with students, even if it's just sharing what else is going on besides school stuff. I think this helps build a stronger relationship with the students. Regards, Barry
Hi David: Sounds like a good balance of media and use of time. Good work! Regards, Barry
Hi Eric: Less anxious students will approach their classes with more openness and willingness to participate, therefore, if we can convey where their status is and give them hope for improvement, they'll be less anxious about their course and perhaps, do a little beeter thatn they otherwise would. Regards, Barry
Hi Susan: We use a portal as well. Even so, I like to "connect" with my students personally. I get to know them, share shortcuts or ways to improve their grades, assist, or sometimes, just listen to their needs or what's going on in their lives. This is one way to show I care and want them to be successful. Regards, Barry
Hi Roger: I believe frequent consulting or sharing grading information is key to improving the relationship the student has with their instructor. Besides the "facts", we can aslo contribute support, encouragement, and convey that we care about their success. Regards, Barry
Hi Roger: Not everyone has to do pretesting, or do it for every class. But when it is used, it does assist the teacher in planning and making adjustments if needed, and comparing intial to ending performance improvement. Regards, Barry
Hi Roger: Teachers who have a natural desire to share what they know are especially effective. I see students migrate to these folks more often, and because they like doing it, these teachers get an extra sense of satisfaction knowing they've helped others. Regards, Barry
