Making field trips and guest speakers a part of instruction

Hi Robin: Well, I'm all for relaxation, whenever and however it's available! What I think is cool is when students who may have only a vague idea about what they will be doing in the work setting, get to picture themselves as employed. It may be a vision they've not yet (or ever) imagined. Many get very jazzed and inspired about their chosen field, and then are better motivated which leads to better performance in the classroom, and ultimately, better workers. Organized and prepared to teach

Hi Robin: No doubt, preparation is required in order to be the better instructor we all aspire to be. And it takes time and effort, valued commodities these days, but it can't be ignored. Planning ahead, relying on resources available to you, using peers for assistance where applicable, and even having students assist with some of your clerical kind of work like making copies, sorting and collalating, stuff like that. Hi Alexandria: Great. Students like field trips and it does help give a student an more precise examination of the work setting they're being trained for. Another point you touched on, I believe many students do get inspired by what they see and learn, and as a result, end up trying harder based on their "revelation" they will soon be out in the work force carrying out real-world responsibilities. Using a teaching journal

Hi Elias: Sounds like a good use for someone who uses a journal on a regular basis. My opinion is that's fine, if it works for the teacher. The last thing a busy teacher needs is another activity added to their plate. But for teachers who do journalize, there are benefits that do help improve the teacher over time, if they're willing to make the self-observed need for change. Regards, Barry

Informing students of status in course

Hi Yolanda: Sharing student performance, grades, points - status, is important, and I think the more frequent the better. Giving advice on how to improve with where their staus is will help the student and show you care about their successfulness. Regards, Barry

Hi Linda: I think teachers know when they've prepared to a sufficient amount, and when they are less than fully prepared. And students notice too. It takes time and effort to plan, but is necessary if we want smooth running, relaxed, interesting and enjoyable classes. The alternative is awful and is not pleasnat for anyone. Regards, Barry

Being a student-centered instructor

Hi Victoria: To me, student centered takes the focus away from my plans to do things a certain way, and refocus on what will work best to teach the student fo improve retention and performance. I suppose there multiples of methods, but the shift in focus is what makes the difference. Regards, Barry

Hi Bryan: Your right about the various types and uses for a journal. I think they are helpful, but not absoultely necessary. I do think that better instructors probably journalize because they find it benefits them in some way. Regards, Barry

Hi Monique: Yes, it does take a committed instructor to take the needed time and effort to prepare - and it shows when that's present, and when it's not. Students notice. Prepared students provide a more relaxed environment, and I think that helps keep students calm and with less angst as well. Regards, Barry
