Hi Paul: I don't pretest all the time, but when I do I find it helps me know where to put my emphasis, especially if it's new students. As far as emphasis, the nice thing about pretesting is I avoid wasting too much time on information already know or don't need. Regards, Barry

Hi Paul: To me there is a difference between extra credit (which I tend to not support) and bonus questions that demonstrate knowledge and expressed in the students own words or manner. Extra credit in lieu of required assignments, poor performance, or missed assignments is merely playing with grades. I would then ask, are we intested in grades or student learning? Regards, Barry

Hi Marianna: Creative! Whenever we can get students to think on their own, they'll remember more and probably retain more as well. I would add that walking into class without preparation puts them at a disadvantage as few are able to assimilate brand new information in one sitting. So preparation by reading, studying, or following assignments given in the syllabus will help assure there will be a more receptive audience. Regards, Barry

Hi Marianna: My approach to instructional media attempts to use lots of variety, mixing up the sequencing so students stay attentive, getting the students involved in the instructional process as much as possible, and having integrating student group study along with media. The combined power of multiple ideas along with good resources with students participating seems to improve the learning process. Some things have to be lectured, but involvement and being engaged with participation is just as effective if structured correctly. Regards, Barry

Hi Marianna: Many professions and professional courses are bvery dynamic. It is is helpful when we use creative techniques to convey essential or important teaching points. So, a jourrnal can be useful. But also, over time, we can reflect on what we've done and begin to think about different ways of reaching the studentrs, especially if technology or practices in the profession changed somewhat. Hi Marianna: A variation that's helpful is to share your rubric at the beginning of a term and poll the students if they feel each "cell" is fair and relative to their study. So, you not only have more obhectivity but also agreement that how your rubric will be used is appropriate! Regards, Barry

Hi Bonnie: I think you've nailed it! For me, student centered shifts the focus off the pre-planned agenda contained within the cuuriculum, to how I can best convey needed information to the student in a way they are able and willing to receive it. Regards, Barry
