We can also provide the important soft skills, professionalism, and communication skills that are useful in most any work setting. Hi Nolan: Yes, these two are common reasons. Others are tiredness (from work) not enough rest, illness (along with meds), disinterest, and (rarely) mismatched course choice. Nonethe less it's our job to reengage students with enthusiam, excitement, activity and participation, and interesting class assignments that "command attention and focus". Hi Gregory: Boy, so true. Balance is key to accurately assessing the learning that is (or is not) occuring. Trial and error works in some cases. For sure, periodic assessment and reevaluation of the grading components should be planned as time allows. Regards, Barry

Hi Nolan: Great, I follow a similar pattern. We use electronic grading (electronic everything!) but still, I believe students benefit from the human touch. So although graded information is almost instantaneously available it shouldn't be a substitute for face to face time with each student. This also helps build trust, conveys support, and strengthens relationsips. Regards, Barry

Hi Henry: Yes - students are quick to pick up on a teacher not being prepared. We might have been for the previous 10 classes, but even one class can deteriorate the confidence students have in their instructor. Being a good role model means preparation every single class session. Regards, Barry

Hi Henry: Boy, that's so true. I think field trips are uniquely powerful in getting students inspired, motivated and reinvigorated in their profesional study. Few activities have this level of impact. I must say, it's possible for a poorly planned field trip to be little more than a waste of time. But thats usually not the case. Regards, Barry

Hi Henry: Groups and inherent group discussion helps keep students engaged. Even so, sometimes nudging students along in their groups may be needed. Participation in almost any form diminishes students from getting diengaged in the first place. Regards, Barry

Hi Henry: True - book knowlege has it's limitations. Much depends on the course or program, but application of learned material is definitely a requisite outcome for graduates as they enter the workforce. Regards, Barry
