This may include soft skills along with career specific uniquenesses that will ultimately contribute to successfulness on the job (material that is beyond the theory, textbook, or idealistic aspect usually required in most career fields). Hi Joel, True, very true. Students do pick up on subleties that an instructor may or may not be aware of. But in the positive, when effort is given to the planning, gathering of resources, being available to to students when they arrive, with clear directions for the daily lesson, along with a thorough presentation involving multiple pre-planned activities, that will convey the teacher is prepared and ready to conduct business, and is serious about it. Hi Kenneth, From my experience, these activites inspire students more than contribute to discouraging away from a career area. What I do think is true is that a students limited idea about about waht a career area offers is often opened up a great deal. And from this, many times the student becomes more motivated to perform better in class and learn the needed information in order to position themselves where they will become an active participant, willing and ready for the work setting. Hi Laura, Right. Getting students focused may have to do with why they're unfocused in the first place. Sometimes, just simple techniques work, other times, changing activities is needed. It kind of depends on many factors, and how many students are involved (one student vs. 3/4 of the class). Barry Westling
