Kathy, Really, I think it's impossible for a teacher to expect to conduct a class effectively if they have not prepared adequately - disorganization is very likely. To teach effectively, we have to put in the time, effort, and planning needed, and to make sure all needed resources are (or will be) available when the class begins. We are paid to be prepared and ready to go. Barry Westling

Daniel, Yes, and understanding is key to learning. When we share status in a course, we are saying, "here is where we stand in our journey, and to get to our destination, this is what needs to be accomplished. Barry Westling

Daniel, This can work. I like simple first, then more drastic if needed. Sometimes just taking a brteak will reset the focus. Other times, a whole different delivery method may be required. I think a lot depends on if its one student or the whole class. Barry Westling

Daniel, This is a great example of the importance of choosing media carefully. There is so much out there, and it all may good, but we want the best, for this class, at this moment. At other times, other choices may be more applicable. Barry Westling

Daniel, Yeah, the merging of what we know with what we need to know oftentimes bridges the gap for learning new things competently. And life experiences definetely help that new knowledge become applicable to the carrer area the student is training for. Barry Westling

James, We can also personalize this time by conveying an interest, listening, offering encouragement and advice, as well as suggestions for improvement that student will recognize contribute to successfulness in their course. Barry Westling

James, I use pretesting when I need to learn what level my students are at and what I may need to adjust to put the emphasis where it will do the most good. Barry Westling

James, Senses can be trained to be more aware of the learning process. By adding variety to the delivery, varied activities, and allowing students to "experience" the learning environment, senses will just naturally become a greater component to the students learning. Barry Westling

James, Right! And student centered instructors are also willing to adapt, modify, and/or adjust their planned curriculum for strategies that will both meet the course objectives and individual student needs Barry Westling

Daniel, Right! There's nothing more "unprofessional" to an adult in school than arriving to a class with the teacher unprepared. It's strange that some students themselves may not be prepared, but even if they don't say anything, in their mind, they recognize the failure of their teacher to be ready to conduct class. Also, we deny our students access to us during this valuable time period - immediarely before class begins. This time can be used to answer questions, ask questions, or just chat. And needless to say, we're paid to be ready. Barry Westling
