Activity

Anthony, Instruction involves a degree of trusted relationship between student and instructor. Sharing performance status is a way to reinforce the relationship (even if the information is unpleasant). Barry Westling
Kim, You're right, improvement can only occur if it is known that it's needed. So, the sooner the better. Barry Westling
Alwyn, I like the interaction that occurs with sharing news, even if it ins't wonderful. I can convey care along with advice. Either way, the student should sense I'm assisting them towards their success. Barry Westling
Tena, I just think in general, the sooner the better we can get grades or performance status information to the student the better prepared they will be to work to make needed improvements, or to feel encouraged. Barry Westling
Jenny, Good point - understanding. That's what we want our students to leave with. Pretesting can add to that process of achieving the understanding of course material. Barry Westling
Davina, Yes, we want to spend most of time dealing with information the students need to know, and the pretest is one great tool that can illuminate the need. Barry Westling
Dan, I think that can happen. For me, I'm usually only pretesting upcoming, new information, and I won't review what I haven't yet taught. Good point about a potential disadvantage of pretesting. Barry Westling
Kim, Yes, pretesting is a great tool for use by instructors. Barry Westling
Wendy, This is nice and a friendly way to address a common occurrence. It true, we expect the full attention of our students, but there are many reasons why it may appear they aren't paying attention, least among them is intentional rudeness. Barry Westling
Tessie, I think this is a perfect sort of back up plan: is instructive, involves the students, lets them think, and can be done with little preparation. Barry Westling
