Michael, I think it's like our own kids. We know they're each different and unique in their own way, so we modify and adjust to reach them and communicate in the way they will understand. So, if we can do something similar with our students we will achieve better instructional efficiency. Barry Westling
Barbara, Great!. Pop quiz has the same principle and idea as the pretest. We want to best help our students, so understanding where they are is a great start. Barry Westling
Doris, Yes, and I think to some degree, our example of preparedness can lead to students to being better prepared as well. But even more, our preparedness usually makes classes run smoother, more together and efficient, and in the end, achieve better student outcomes. Barry Westling
Michael, Great. Good instruction, soft skills (attendance, punctuality, grooming, language), theory and knowledge will best help our students be well prepared. Barry Westling
Michael, That must have sent an awful message to his students who probably wondered how much other "on the fly" material would be in store for them that day.We have just a few opportunities to make good, lasting impressions. If not, after that, students will form undesirable opinions about their instructors. Barry Westling
Deb, Great. I agree students like stories, and those that relate to the professiona are particularly memorable and usually instructional too. Barry Westling
Barbara, Good point. It's true that each cohort is a bit different and being able to try new or past activities that have proved successful can be very effective, and of course, a journal is a great way to memorialize those various activities, thoughts, and personal observations. Barry Westling
Jon, It's good to recognize we all have strengths that make us good at what we do. Understanding there are weaker areas that can also be improved on makes for committed instructors. Barry Westling
Leslie, Great practice. Students notice the ways an instructor prepares, and some get into the flow the instructor is attempting to provide. Those students are usually the ones that do better in class. Barry Westling
Shafi, I believe students appreciate the instructors who are thorough, take time to review their expectations, and then work with students to see their expectations met. Barry Westling
