Hi Brian: Passion is a very cool attribute as it can inspire, instruct, and change lives. Regards, Barry
Hi Anthony: I'll say that there is some benefit in giving students a hand in selecting where they feel help or study is needed. I think without too much direction, many students would choose to waste time or use their time on less productive material. Of course, if you're circulating about and can monitor their activities, then that probably gives a bit more structure.
Hi Lawrence: Adapting to changes really does keep a leeon or course interesting and up to date. In your case, it appears it is essential. Willingness to make those needed changes will make the difference between a mediorcre and exceptional class. Regards, Barry
Hi Donald: Great! Rubrics do help organize information and decison making a lot. I think the initial effort it takes to set is well offset by the tremendous benefit to the instructor. Regards, Barry
Hi Steven: I will have to agree, every snowflake is uniquely different yet magnificently wonderful. So it is with instructors! Regards, Barry
Hi Ed: Well, I think it's true that a lack of self confidence can impair an otherwise competent instructor, but I don't know about not being able to teach anyone anything. But your post does underscore the importance confidence can play in conducting classes. Regards, Barry
Hi David: Yes! Reaching your students. That statement really rings true becdause it will allow an entrance into the students world and have a greater chance of staying with them. Regards, Barry
Hi Paul: Good point. Walking around avoids the sense of a static presentation. You probably also get a better sense of how the students are receiving your lesson and comments.
Hi Barry: Good points all. I don't think we can tell students to trust, rather the faculty has to earn their trust. Ways to do that include: be open and honest, accessible, caring, assisting, and offer encouragement. There are more attributes but these would be among the important ones. Regards, Barry
Hi Paul: Good thoughts, Paul. You're right, it has to come from within. Openness to change is hard for some but has to be for progress to occur. Regards, Barry
