Hi James: Testing to the material of the class and in a fashion that will truly assess if learning has occurred seem to be a good path to follow. Providing grading expectations is a great way for students to know in advance what their final grade is likely to be. Regards, Barry
Hi Lawrence: These seem like pretty easy resources to put into place when there's little time to prepare and you want something productive to use as a replacement for the planned activity - which is really the purpose of back-up plans in the first place. Regards, Barry
Hi Lawrence: Wow - how wonderful! I would say that laying out such a vision of faraway or unfamiliar places should grab the students attention quite rightly! Regards, Barry

Hi Lawrence: One way some teachers have it both ways is to put put all extra credit into one category, say essays for example, which may be worth 25% of their grade. Once that 25% category is filled up, no more extra credit (becasue there's no place to add it). So although the student may may performed poorly in the past, they are given a smidge of opportunity to make up for it - but not a lot. Some institutions have existing policies that either mandate or forbid use of EC. Teachers at these institutions just have go along with… >>>

Hi Lawrence: You're right - most topics have 1-2 prefered methods that probably are better choices for selected topics. I sit in on my peer colleagues and get ideas too. "Hey, I never thought of doing that, or using that example, etc.) It's always a great experience. Regards, Barry
Hi Judith: I agree that beveryone wants to believe their tests are fair and accurate. Sometimes it takes great care to achieve that goal. But the time and effort will be appreciated by the students. Regards, Barry
Hi Judith: Great! Student focused is directed to the specific cohort of student a teacher has at present. This allows the choice of media to fill the need. Regards, Barry
Hi Stephen: Good perspective! We all want to be the best teachers we can be. And just hoping that will happen probably isn't going to make that happen - we have to work at it. The more we know about ourselve, and am honest about our pecularities and unique attributes, the better will be the environment for us to work at becoming better at what we do. Regards, Barry
Hi Stephen: Good ideas. Good back up plans allow the user to activate the plan on relatively short notice and be in the flow of the regular lesson plan - seamless so to speak. Regards, Barry
Hi Stephen: Developing a fair grading system is certainly a worhwhile goal. Fairness alone, without being comprehensive or accurate in assesssing essential student outcomes may fall short of an effective evaluation system. Regards, Barry
