Awarding extra credit

Hi Virginia: I think just about everyone likes to get extra points and while some students at lower end of the scale may be helped alongf by extra credit it may not help them if they haven't mastered the basic skills taught in the class. Regards, Barry

Using senses in learning

Hi Lisa: More and more classes are utilizing the hybrid or blended classroom model. Really, the only difference is in the delivery method. But I think there's an added advantage in that students in blended classes tend to take responsibility for more of their learning than do their passive classroom student conterparts. Anytime a student can become more engaged in their learning, that's going to be a good thing. Regards, Barry

Informing students of status in course

Hi Grace: Based on what you say you're doing, I'm surprised you're getting 50% in this category. You suggest perception is at thye root. Here's a suggestion. Next time you have new students, ask them on the very first day "how many would feel it would be fair if I graded and gave your quiz and test results back the same day?". I'm going to guess you'd get nearly 100% affirmative response. If some disagreed, ask them what more you could do. If it seems reasonable, you could consider it. But even if not, you have now set the expectation… >>>

Goal of educating students

Hi Dana: Ultimately, students have to be able to apply their skills in a practical way, true. Gaining those skills in the classroom, lab, clinical is paramount to them achieving the needed skills for succesful work. Our job is to assure we assist the student is acquiring their need skills. Organized and prepared to teach

Hi Dana: It does set a tone. Prepared teachers have more control and contribution to their students acheivements that lesser prepared teachers. Organization keeps "minds and desks" uncluttered with unnecessary information and material. Regards, Barry
