About me

I spent about 25 years as a journalist. I was a reporter, editor and columnist for various newspapers around the country, most recently the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. Since leaving journalism, I have been an educator and a consultant. I worked for Jerry Thomas Public Relations, where I was Vice President, for three years. Then I started my own company, GTB Communications. GTB has served a number of clients, advising their executives on everything from maintaining a Facebook page to preparing for TV interviews. But the most rewarding thing I have done since leaving journalism is teach. In addition to teaching at ECPI, I have taught at the University of Phoenix and Saint Augustine's University. At Saint Augustine's, I chair the Media & Communications Department. I have been married for 23 years and have two daughters, one a sophomore in college and another who is a senior in high school

Activity

Synchronous and asynchronous environments require different preparation and different tactics.

Establishing your presence in online courses might take a little more effort than in classroom settings. Techniques include posting a strong bio, getting all students to introduce themselves (and taking note of details), and being active in monitoring discussions,

Online instructors have to be on top of the material (both content and process) and ahead of their students (prepared for classes.) Courses must be structured in an intuitive way and the structure has to be clearly demonstrated to students. There will always be problems though and instructors should be clear on how to engage IT.
