It is important to have a reliable and consistent method for keeping track of communication.  Students have many reasons why they may not be participating and communicating appropriately.

For teaching content use group discussion opportunities and also provide students the opportunity to have one-on-one time with the teacher.  Keep all feedback as positive as possible.

Students need to know who you are and that you are available to help them. It is necessary to develop a positive relationship with them.

Students will benefit from an organized teacher who knows how to access all the functions of the course.
