About me

I am in my 12th year as a CTE Business Education Teacher.  I love the work I do and the students I teach.  I am a middle school teacher, teaching in a Title I school.  I have been married to my wonderful, amazing husband for 27 years.  When I started, both of my children were still at home - one was in middle school and one in elementary.  Today they are both out of the home and doing well.

I believe all students can learn.  I also believe students need the skills and knowledge they can gain from a CTE course.  Unfortunately, our value is not recognized as it should be.  Yet, like the professionals we are, we continue to impart the knowledge and skills to our students that we know will benefit them in the future and even now as students.

I learned that there are a variety of communication tools and with careful, intentional research, you can find the ones that best meets the needs of your class.  Obtaining feedback is essential to determining the effectiveness of the communication tools used.  Monitoring is a must to ensure only students in the class have access and that timely feedback is provided.  Guidelines must be set and communicated to students.

I learned from this module the importance of organizing your information in a way that easy to access and to follow.  I also learned that it is critical to engage students and seek buy in from students on the first day by including a welcome letter or an engaging activity that will capture their attention.  It is a good thing to allow colleagues to look at your site and offer feedback on the flow of the course content.

I learned from this module the importance of good communication and facilitation.  While it is a goal that students take responsibility for their learning, it is also the instructor's responsibility to design lesson content that encourages participation, interest, and where learning occurs.  I also learned it is important to use a number of datapoints to evaluate learning outcomes and course objectives were achieved.

In this module, I learned the importance of establishing and implementing guidelines to make sure everyone understands the flow of the class.  I also learned that onging communication, organization, and consistency are must-haves for content delivery and student learning.

In this module, I learned that there are a variety of technology tools that can be used to assist teaching and learning online.  Instructors should first research different tech tools to determine which ones would work best to enable learners to accomplish learning goals.  I also learned the four types of teaching styles and that every teaching style should include facilitation on both ends.  Lastly, I learned that it is important to assess the effectiveness of the tech tools used in order to make changes.

This was a rich module!  It was eye-opening and most informative.  Sometimes I have used… >>>

In this course, I learned that it's important to obtain feeback from all stakeholders to determine what revisions are needed for improvement in  the course itself and in teaching practice to close the loop.  Closing the loop links planning for the course with assessment and allows for changes to improve linking.  I also learned that when revisions are made, it is important to use several types of evaluation tools in order to obtain a clear picture.

From time to time I have obtained feedback  from students, but this is something I will implement in my courses to guide me in… >>>

In this module I learned how to view assessments as a learning tool for both myself and students.  Assessment outcomes allow me to see how effective I was in communicating the learning objectives in a way that students understood the learned what was taught.  I also learned how valuable rubrics can be in communicating learning expectations, which in turn allow students to demonstrate their understanding or misunderstanding.  In this module I learned how valuable self and peer assessments are in helping students to identify problem areas in their work and in the work of their peers, with the help of… >>>

This was a rich module.  I currently use a LMS and this module has me thinking about what I need to possibly change and how I will  move forward in the course.

I learned communication is key to the success of an online course.  It begins with the syllabus, which should be an ever evolving document that provide specific directions and answers to student questions.  I also learned that it's important to create a community of learners who are participative and to use online resources to assist in this communications.  Then learned the importance of structuring your course to scaffold student learning and focus for student activities.

In this module, I learned that it's important to be consistent as you develop your modules.  This will help students to be successful and learn quicker how to progress through the modules.  I also learned the importance of having an objects database repository to store files, documents, images that you can use and which will cut down on the amount of time it takes to build your modules.
