David, Most instructors are focused on the academic well being of their students and do not feel obligated to address student referrals. Student referrals are a means to raise the caliber of your students since many times they are your best students. Another way to look at a studnet referral is as a compliment to you as an educator. Betty, Vulnerability is the key. I recently read a book that referenced a HeLa cell research project conducted at Ohio State Prison in the 60's and the Supreme Court ruled that regardless of the fact that the people were of sound mind and gave consent it was an unethical practice due to the emotional vulnerability of the subjects. This is a case that set the precedence on many rules and regulations throughout the country.Cindy Bryant
