Activity

I learned the components of scaffolding to ensure student success.  I intend to incorporate these elements into my teaching by printing these out as a daily reminder.

  • Provide clear instructions
  • Clarify purpose
  • Keep students on task
  • Offer assessment to clarify purpose
  • Direct students to worthy sources
  • Reduce uncertainty and disappointment
  • Deliver efficiency
  • Create momentum

I have learned that consistency is key in an online course.  I plan to be as consistent as possible in all communication to students.

I have learned that there are different types of students and different approaches to effectively handling challenging behaviors from each.  Generally, proactive communication with students can mitigate problematic behaviors.  I plan to openly and effectively communicate with all of my students to promote student success.

I have learned that it is critical for the instructor to actively participate in the asynchronous discussion.  Instructor participation guides student learning, facilitates discussion, and adds a social component to online courses that increases student engagement. I plan to be as active as possible in my course discussions.

I have learned that it is critical to make personal connections with students early and often.  I will do this by incorporating video and audio responses and feedback as much as possible to increase the personal connection.

As an online instructor, it is imperative that I have a good working knowledge of the Course Management System from both the instructor and student perspective to support my students. Prior to teaching, I will ensure that I become familiar with Canvas so I can best support my students.
