About me

Activity

Randy, I use pretesting to plan the way I want to modify my individual classes in order to best achieve the learning results I want. Barry Westling
Myrna, Yes, smooth, effortless flowing of material can only occur with adequate preparation, and perhaps, even rehearsal. Barry Westling
Myrna, I agree. Unfortunately these acts of generosity are not as abundant as they once were due to the awful state of national economy. But shrewd marketers ought not forget that today's students will be tomorrows purchasers. Barry Westling

Myrna, Good introspective comment. I think being sincere, genuine versions of ourselves is very important. Trying to emulate another rarely works successfully. And while it's true some many have an innate, natural ability to relate a certain way, we have to remember we were all hired for our expertise, knowledge, experience, and bring our training, education , and workplace experience to the classroom setting. That's unique to each of us - none two are alike. Being natural, approachable, fair, consistent, confident, and displaying a good sense of humor are traits that will bring success to most any instructor. Yes, we can… >>>

Matt, Recognition is great, and I encourage that. There are many ways to give student true recognition apart from just giving away points. The toughest part of EC is that my good students, the ones who do exceptionally well all the time, turn in all assignments, and complete all that is asked of them are offended when they see others who have not earned their points getting an opportunity to receive them in a relatively easy manner. Barry Westling
Davina, I thinks as much as providing the best instruction, a good instructor will manage to find time to share grade and performance status to students. Like a road map to a destination, sharing class performance states where the student is in comparison to where we want them to arrive when the course completes. If we do this with sincerity, frequently, and early on, students will benefit and appreciate the effeort and time, and perhaps reinforce trust and respect for the instructor. Barry Westling

Myrna, This is a good point. Of course we want to provide a safe setting for field trips, and our guest speakers need to be appraised of any special campus requirements (name badge, dress and grooming, use of personal property). Some programs do require more of their instructors and institutions for non-classroom activities. Of course, once all of the liability and legal concerns are addressed, I have found the field trip to be one of the most memorable and enjoyable activities students state enhanced their learning and instructional time at school. I say it over and over again, these activities… >>>

Andrea, Sure, that's fine. I think having a bonus question on an exam that allows a student to demonstrate knowledge beyond what the instructor asks for is not a bad idea and, in fact, I routinely do that. I think a bonus question, available to all students is a bit different from extra credit. Some may say it's just semantics. But I think it's different. What you and I are suggesting adds to the assessment of learning, while EC tends to just give away points with little merit or contribution to demonstrated learning. I will also drop the lowest quiz… >>>

Ryan, I* agree. If students know they can buffer their otherwise poor performance with some type of busy work that has little to do with real learning, they will use that opportunity to it's fullest. Barry Westling
Tamikah, I agree (but use the "B" as a threshold for intervention). I also try to base the "B" work on tests and quizzes, not the overall grade because that often has softer assignments mixed in and may not be truly effective of the level of knowledge the student acquired. Frequent and early on discussions work best for me, as I want tiome to offer my support and encouragement, along providing enough time for corrections or improvement to make an impact on their grade.
