Travis, Right. Pretesting recognizes that students come to us at all different levels. This is a great tool to help identify how best we can help our students. Barry Westling
Rodney, I don't always pretest. But when I do, the information is always a helpful adjunct to tweaking my class for maximum learning effectiveness. Barry Westling
Travis, It does take all kinds. And ever so true with class instruction. I think we all have our areas we know how to shine, and perhaps there are weaker areas as well. Tuning in to what works and then amplifying those traits ought to sprout creative, lively class sessions. Barry Westling
Richard, Right! If we can achieve these grad goals, we will have done our students a great service. Barry Westling
Travis, I have found if people are sincere, students are willing to forgive almost any error or mistake. Staying humble while maintaining a strong hold on the class is a good balance and creates a pleasant learning environment. Barry Westling
Richard, I agree that the classroom can serve as a surrogate for the work setting in many ways. Being ready "for work" can set the tone for the class as one that is geared for learning needed information to secure solid employment. Barry Westling
Rodney, Well said. An organized instructor projects competence, and classes run smoother too. Barry Westling

William, If it were possible, suppose you could arrange a guest speaker representing a major or significant employer in the area. After their introduction, suppose the guest speaker asked the students to write out their short term and long term goals as it relates to future employment with his/her company. I believe the students own critique of their responses using correct grammar, punctuation, and quality of thought might bring to light the importance of writing skills. Of course, there are numerous variations of this exercise, but the point is for the students to see for themselves the importance GE/writing/math skills… >>>

Roshally, Very true. Competence and confidence go hand in hand. With good organization and solid preparation, classes should run smoother, and students will detect that these classes are being led by competent, knowledge, and ready instructors. Barry Westling
Maureen, Our instructional path leaves a lot of opportunities for detours. So as you say, both instructor and student benefit from regular and frequent discussions as to performance in order to steer the student in the right path. Barry Westling
