Lito, I agree it true how the instructor conveys progress can impact the way the student receives it. I believe nearly everyone can benefit from courteous, caring encouragement and support. That goes a long way with students, and helps build trust and respect between the instructor and student. Barry Westling
Stephanie, Just like instruction, early-on feedback about progress is an equal component to students knowing where they stand, improvements needed, and caring words of encouragement. Barry Westling
Amy, Yes, these reasons are among the many that gives substance to not awarding EC. Barry Westling
Tamara, I tend to favor not giving EC. It's not given at work, so I feel it is not appropriate for the classroom setting that is geared to prepare graduates for their chosen career. Barry Westling
Aprilan, Post tests are great, and are usually received very well by students. They like feed back. And "tests" such as a post test are welcomed since usually these are not graded (but could be). Barry Westling
David, Sometimes I think of planning for student learning like packing for a trip. I have to consider many possibilities, and potentially leaving one vital part out could be disastrous for the trip. So it is with pretesting. By knowing my student needs, I can better plan for my adventure with them. Barry Westling
Lito, Right! This is a great example of the power of the pretesting activity. Just as students have breakthroughs in their learning, we can have better understanding of our students through the pretesting process. Barry Westling
Herman (Lonnie), Good point. Adult learners can act like juveniles at times, but as consumers, they also expect competent instruction that is directly applicable to their program of study. Barry Westling
Kendall, More senses are always better than just the same old methods day after day. It really doesn't take too much creativity to think and plan for alternative and more interesting ways to present information. Barry Westling
Aprilan, Great use of variety in selecting your media choices. More variety adds interest, demonstrates creativity, and is more likely to engage students by active learning. Barry Westling
