About me

Activity

Jennifer, Great. That discussion part is probably the most important. Electronic grading is valuable in that students can view their status most any time. But it is missing the interaction, support, and advice from the instructor, and I think providing that in person (perhaps with a brief written summary) is better than just viewing grade information passively. Janet, If the course is like a journey, then regular progress reports are needed to convey how close to their destination they are. Barry Westling
Kelly, This is a hoped for outcome, and probably in many cases it is. Some students will acknowledge their poorer performance but not change anything with their study habits, weaker areas, or topics they need to improve on. I will sometimes have the student fill out a short form that holds them accountable for what they plan to do to improve a grade. This is done to force accountability and self-motivation. Jennifer, This particular activity is great, as it involves students, allows for independent work, and uses multiple senses in the process. Good for you! Barry Westling
Jennifer, Sounds very thought out and interactive. Great! Barry Westling
Christine, I believe the status and progress report is as important as the course material we are presenting. It gives both instructor and student a look at how close to learning the required material has occurred. Barry Westling
Janet, This can be an effective tool that is both fun and educational (or reinforcing learned material). Barry Westling
Janet, Yes, we want our students to be able to learn, graduate, and get and keep a job. When this all comes together, we have achieved success. Barry Westling
Jennifer, I think it's wonderful that your institution requires field trips and guest speakers on a frequent and regular basis. These activities are usually so well received I feel like all schools ought to make a similar mandate. Getting a different perspective and seeing real work setting environments can do wonders to motivate, inform, stimulate enthusiasm, and prepare students for the real world. Barry Westling
Brenda, True, progress and encouragement can help convey student progress. Most classes have learning objectives that will be measured along the way and students must know where they stand in their journey to that important destination. Barry Westling
