Linda, Great. I think discussion and/or review are always great ways to make use of time available due to whatever. Students can never get enough review of essential material. And discussion of course material is interactive, kind of fun, and productive use of time. Barry Westling
Karen, This is a good application of checking for understanding. Our course objectives define what outcomes we want the students to possess. How we deliver, present, and practice learned material determines the degree to which students have retained and are able to apply their knowledge of a given topic. Getting them to the point where they are comfortable is a great achievement. Barry Westling
Linda, Learning improves when more senses are involved. You have described many that are undoubtedly helpful to your students retaining needed information. Application of learned information also adds to retention, and you have an abundance of applied learning opportunities in your classes. Barry Westling
Karen, Yes, if we are training students for a particular career setting, they will need the skills, knowledge and critical thinking ability that gets them a job and helps them keep it. Barry Westling
Jill, I agree that to the student, the instructor is the representative of the institution, and with good preparation, effective instruction that's enjoyable and interesting, and an approachable demeanor, students will be generally satisfied and more willing to express their sentiments in post course evaluations. Barry Westling
Carlos, Students can decide wherte to put their focus when their instructor provides regular updates as to status. Barry Westling
Carlos, I use pretesting to help me prepare myself to help my students. I can save time by putting emphasis where it's needed. Barry Westling
Carlos, For me, respectable student outcomes include proficiency with the knowledge, skills, and practical application that prepares students for meaningful and successful job opportunities. Barry Westling
Carlos, I believe student want and need directions, instructions, and clear expectations about a class operations, This order helps provide a smoother class setting, and as a result, students are likely to be more compliant with the instructor and institutional expectations. Barry Westling
Roberta, Students do respond better to the class and their instructor when they see time, effort, and planning has gone into the lesson for the day. Perhaps more respect for the instructor will occur, but that's really incidental to our motivation, which is to be ready to provide the best class we can each and every time it's offered.
