Ivy, In general, there are varieties of pretesting strategies. One is before students even enter the course. Another is first day to see what prior learning has occurred. Another is prior to major tests to see where more study or review may be needed. Whatever form we use, there is nearly always useful information provided an instructor can use to plan for better use of their time and the students learning outcomes. Barry Westling
Kendall , I can see where this might be effective for you. I do the equivalent by randomly asking specific students questions as the discussion progresses. Then I'll ask another specific student to respond to the previous classmates answer to my question. Soon the whole class understands they may be called on at any time and need to be "present" in order to be prepared. Barry Westling
Ivy, I think everyone is diverse and unique in their own way. So, everyone will have their own version of upbeat, energetic, animated, sense of humor, etc. Students tend to stay interested when their instructor makes class interesting. And I think everyone has their own way of doing that. Barry Westling
Tanya, Wonderful. I think you do a great job when these goals are achieved. Barry Westling
Ivy, Expeactations are great and really needed for students to know what's in the mind of their instructor. Preparation allows for class sessions to be smooth and free flowing as a result. Barry Westling
Zack, Yes, and I think when students are motivated from activities we plan, they feel much more appreciative of the effort their instructor and school has done on their behalf. This helps promote good P{R, rapport, trust and respect. Barry Westling
Lisa, Wow, 28 classes! The thing about the student centered approach is your students ultimately benefit from your focus on what they need to know without spending as much time on information they already know. So in the end, you and they benefit! Barry Westling
AnnaMarie, Right. To better understand how best to instruct new students to a class, getting some information about their prior learning gives the instructor an edge in modifying or making small adjustments that end up serving the overall classroom needs better than just "winging it", with perhaps sketchy ideas about what the students know. Barry Westling
Michelle, It's true that our personality can make a positive influence towards students. Who would not flourish in an atmosphere with an instructor who demonstrated they are honest and sincere, upbeat and enthusiastic, creative and energetic, approachable and understanding, and knowledgeable in their topic area? These traits are among those that create better learning environments for our students. Barry Westling
Jamie, Great! Your personality type is one I wish all instructors would adopt. I think the more an instructor views their class from the lens of their students, they will be more understanding (and more willing) to make choices that favor making the class experience one that conveys "I care and I'm interested in your success". Unfortunately, too many instructors have become (or begin) hardened, stuck in there own ways, and make the instructional experience disagreeable for the students subjected to their classes.
