About me

Activity

I try to encourage our new instructors that everyone is nervous. But also that even on a bad day, you know more than your students, be confident and they will follow.

I find they often are bringing in outside issues. May just need someone to let them vent, they may not have that outside of class.
Helping students use school resources more effectively as well as not seeing themselves as victims in there own life helps them be more committed to completing their education commitment.

I try to make sure students are very clear about grading practices and expectations so that they can focus more on content than a particular grade. I think this encourages them so be successful and not "beat down" by a arbitrary grading system.
I find that students are motivated to push their comfort zone in production (culinary) when it's made clear that the group will benifit by learning opportunities from not only the items that get it "right", but also the ones that provide contrast to the persctibed defenition of "right". That we all benefit from the experience of observing "mistakes" and how to better plan for avoiding those pitfals.
As a potentially high risk exercise, do others find that having the group do self progression assessments a way to keep everyone involved and equally participating? I do this for groups of 4 or so when working on a 5 week project.

We encourage students to follow up with and encourage each other, build community to combat attrition.
Should be clearly outlined by admin. staff. We have far to many that seem surprised late in the program when a class schedule change is made.
In helping to resolve student issues it's helped to not take for granted what someones ability to seek out or utilized available resources
I try to begin the week with a group touch on what everyone did as it relates to our course of study. Also challenging them to do something over the weekend that we can discuss in class as a "current events" class related subject for discussion.
