About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Maggie, If over preparing eases your anxiety, continue to over prepare. I try to always have two days worth of work prepared, just in case. Patricia
Hi Adel, I often think where would folks be today if they never made mistakes? Mistakes are not always a bad thing; some mistakes are great life lessons. Patricia
Hi David, Hearing a different voice is always a good thing. It means more to the students whenever the guest speaker echoes what was said by the teacher. Patricia
Hi Eric, We will always have these type of students. These students need to be spoken to privately about learning how to take responsibility for their own action. This type of behavior will not be tolerated in the work world where fingers are pointed at everyone else. Patricia
Hi John, What an awesome list of suggestions! I especially like the suggeston on self talk. I tell me students to help encourage themselves positive self talk is extremely effective. Posistive self help helped me tremendously while I was in undergrad as well as grad school. I still even do it to this day. Patricia
Hi Roy, I constantly ask my students as I am lecturing, are there any questions, am I clear, is everyone with me, etc. Invariably there is someone who is very lost and will not say a word. Communication is key from both the instructor and student.
Hi Mariann, I like you ideas of having a positive instructor image. I can tell you are a great person and you care...you even mentioned the custodian in your response. Custodians are often looked down up. Thank you for seeing people as people and not giving them royal treatment because of prestigous positions/titles. I can tell you are a fine instructor. I enjoy working with "down to earth" people, such as yourself. You and I will make a great team. Patricia
Hi Suzie, What other benefits have you observed from students by being shown examples? Patricia
Hi Jaclyn, Great points mentioned! I like the idea of walking around because if they are watching my every move, then they may possibly be up to no good. Patricia
Hi David, I know; sometimes we simply have to sleep on certain things. We need to get the emotional part out and make a mature, professional, rational decision.
