About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Hi Tammy, Being prepared is certainly key to reducing instructor anxiety. I like to over prepare by having two days worth of work ready for a given day. Knowing that you are prepared gives you a sense of confidence as well. Patricia
Hi John, I have witnessed unconfused students cheating as well, however I do see your point. If we do a thorough job instructing, it should minimize cheating. Patricia
Hi Marivic, Students should never be given the indication by an instructor that you are their friend. Students should fully understand that you are their teacher and this should be displayed in every way. Patricia
Hi Matthew, Wow, you sound a lot like myself. My students know from Day 1 based on my presence that I am a true professional, yet friendly, and they can come talk to me about anything. Professionalism is all in the way you carry yourself. Patricia
Hi Stevie, I am sure there is some lecture in the program, but hands-on is probably more dominant. Patricia
Hi Tonya, Great question! Actually, at my institution our students create a very impressive portfoli for the job search process that incudes the following: Resume Cover Letter Reference Sheet Transcript Immunization Records Examples of Work Awards Letters of Recommendations Students are very proud of their portfolios, and employers always comment on how impressive and professional the portfolios are. Patricia
Hi Aylee, We are our students role models. We must look and act the part. Students learn professionalism through our appearance and actions. Patricia
Hi Samuel, Yes, it does give the students something to look forward to. Students are more eager to begin whenever an example has been shared because of knowing exactly what needs to be done. Patricia
Hi TJ, The computer is a very engaging teaching tool. Students get excited whenever they are allowed to use the computer. Patricia
Hi Robert, I really like this. I remember a professor doing this in one of my classes, and it does help with anxiety and the need to want to cheat. The help sheet really put me at ease. Thanks for sharing; you took me back some years. Patricia
