About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Coleen, Employment opportunities is a big biggie to get buy in from students. I like to bring in current classified ads in the field to generate buy in from my students. Patricia
Hi John, Preparation is key, and mental preparation is definitely a plus as well. Patricia
Hi Velma, I also like to ask silent students real open-ended type questions that are more opinionated generated so that there is no real right answer. Patricia
Hi Markesha, You need to develop a PowerPoint for Day 1 detailing the purpose of the course, why they are enrolled in the course, benefits of taking the course, jobs from mastering the course, etc. We do this at my institution, and students quickly see WHY they are taking the course. Patricia
Hi Robert, I like how you make your time quality with your students, and you show them that you geniunely care about them and their success. Patricia
Hi Sharif, Guest speakers really have a lot to shed light on with students. Guest speaker stories are truly inspiring. Patricia
Hi Marissa, Yes students will emulate what they see good or bad; hopefully nothing but good to emulate from instructors. Patricia
Hi Shirley, Guest speakers act as a way for students to really visualize their future success. Patricia
Hi Sally, It does start again the next period! A teacher's job is never over! We have to have a constant NATURAL HIGH every day. Patricia
Hi M. Hussain, Great list of strategies! You may want to add a participation grade to the list. We have implemented a participation grade at my institution, and it works beautifully. Attendance, attitude, and participation have improved. Patricia
