About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi Daniel, Students need to and want to know how they are going to benefit from the course. Tell students the benefits of taking the course. Patricia Scales
Hi Chris, Some students just will not allow you to get close to them. I try to make small talk with the silent students daily to eastablish a rapport. Patricia Scales
Hi Thomas, Typically I do not have disciplinary problems at this level, however, when I do, I address the problem quickly and swiftly to let them know this type of behavior WILL NOT be tolerated. Patricia Scales
Hi Catharine, Listening is key! It is never a bad idea to have a witness sit in when you are addressing an angry student. Patricia Scales
Hi Christopher, I like the idea of a self evaluation, and then you give your own evaluation either adding or subtracting to theirs. This is a great way to determine if students recognize their strengths and their weaknesses in the area. Patricia Scales
Hi Shannon, It is simple, treat ALL students the same so that no comparisons have to be made. Patricia Scales
Hi Regina, Students are more engaged whenever a variety of teaching methods are utilized, such as role playing, simulations, scenarios, case studies, field trips, guest speakers, etc. Patricia Scales
Hi Mellisa, Guest speakers are the best! Guest speakers let students know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Patricia Scales
Hi Susan, I concur! All problems should be dealt with quickly and swiftly. Consistency is key. Patricia Scales
Hi Stephen, Students love knowing that they are learning from a very knowledgeable instructor. Patricia Scales
