About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Hi LaWanda, We are always interested in WHAT IS IN IT FOR ME! Guest speakers play a large role in the "WIFM" syndrome. Our students are enrolled with hopes of graduating and getting a great career at the end. Patricia
Hi Richard, Preparation is a must in the education field. I generally do not ask an instructor about a student. I always like to form my own opinion of a student. I am good about figuring out students quickly. Patricia
Hi Troy, You have super ways of getting your students involved and interested in course content. Videos are nice visuals so that students can actually see what their growth should be by the end of the course. I too like to bring in products so that my students can have and idea by the end of the course as to how their finished product should look. Patricia
Hello Richard, Students like to be listened to. Exactly what do you mean when you say the students never should have been there? We as educators must be open minded and give everyone a chance. Patricia
Hi Curran, It is important to communicate with your colleagues. It is amazing what you can learn from each other. It is good to share your success stories as well as your mistakes. Patricia
Curran, Whenever students know that you care about them, they look at things from a more graceful perspective, and they will try to do whatever is necessary to please you. Once a student trusts you, you fully gain the student in all areas. Patricia
Hi Curran, It is a must as an educator to show students that you are excited about the subject matter. Excitement is a trickle down effect. Excitement coming from the top is motivating! Patricia
Hi Richard, Certainly, this is a topic of great interest, simply because we as educators have these type students. It is no doubt hard to teach in college what should have been taught in high school, but we try, simply by offering all the techniques you gave. Patricia
Hi Cynthia, I always tell my instructors, you must have tough skin in the education arena. Do not take things personally, you know your status as a professional. Patricia
Hello Cynthia, Great way to address policies/procedures! There is nothing like knowing right off the bat! Students appreciate it whenever things are made known to them up front. Patricia
