About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hello Sharon, It is great to break things up a bit with handouts, PowerPoint presentations, etc. Students love to know they are cared about and listened to. Students want to know how assigments, projects, etc. are going to be practical to the workplace. Patricia
Hi David, It is very important to share the course requirements on the first day of class. I also like the idea as to how you share the course requirements throughout the course. Students always enjoy hearing the related instructor's experiences as well. Patricia
Hi David, One thing the military teaches you is discipline. You're right, some of our young people have not a clue about discipline. It is becoming scary. I agree, it is all about "how bad do you want your education." Whenever I was in graduate school, I remembered saying to myself, "I do not care if it kills me, I will complete graduate school." I was just that determined. Patricia
Hello Karen, Wow, I've never tried this tactic in all my years of teaching. This is a must try for me. Patricia
Hello Karen, As educators, we do know a lot, but we don't know everything. I agree, I try not to be an "I know all" teacher. Patricia
Karen- We have a cell phone policy at my institution. If the cell phone makes a NOISE, the student is automatically sent out of class for the day. The student receives "0" on all work for the day. We hardly have any cell phone violations because of the strict policy. I generally do not have a problem with the internet. Patricia-
Hello Karen, Students enjoy knowing what they are studying/learning is current. Who wants to learn out-dated information anyway? Patricia
Hi Tricia, What a clever way to get students to communicate with each other, and at the same time, the students are learning about accounting. Patricia
Hi Karen, I try to make it a pratice to speak with students privately. I try to avoid giving students a reason to bark back. Sometimes when you confront students in front of the entire class, the students want to bark back. Patricia
Hello Karen, Again, nothing is better than having fun while learning. Students tend to really retain information that is learned in a fun way. Patricia
