About me

I've been a career educator for over 20 years. I currently serve as the Academic Coordinator for Brookstone College of Business and continue to be active in the classroom as a Business Instructor. My motto is "A student doesn't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." I was honored to receive the Career College Association National Teacher of the Year award in 2001. I just love teaching!

Activity

Hi James, Many, many years ago I was very close or even younger than most of my students. I always established the precedence on Day 1 whenever a new grading period began. Utimatley, it is your job to keep your classes focused and moving. Continue to keep them moving and focused. Patricia
Hi Ron, Whenever you have the opportunity to train, please make sure you write down everything. You really need to pretend you are a student in most cases. I even require my instructors that train under another instructor to take the tests, quizzes, final exam, daily assignments, etc. It is certainly a great advantage to be able to "team teach". Patricia
Hi Michael, You do get some of those students that are there, simply because mom and dad said so. I generally have a heart-to-heart conversation with these unhappy students. The conversation tends to work on most of them. For some reason, these students need constant motivation/encouragement in order to retain them. Patricia
Hello William, It is good pick other instructors' brains. You really can learn from the mistakes other instructors have made. By learning from other instructors, you can advance to a more effective teacher a lot quicker. Patricia
Hi William, Students like the open line of communication, and students also appreciate fairness. We as educators must listen to our students. Patricia
Hi Timothy, I've encountered this type of student as well. You normally have to nip that attitude in the bud immediately. These type students can be dangerous to your institution with their negativity. Patricia
Hi Mark, Trial and error can at times be the best teacher. I've learned how to do a lot of things right by first doing them wrong. Patricia
Hi Darlene, It is the nature of the business, and as long as you stay in education, you will always have challenging students. You deal with the challenging students as indicated in the course and other methods that have worked for you. Patricia
Hello Darlene, You said it. Only one person knows everything as indicated in your response. Whenever we don't know something, we should not feel bad, simply make sure the answer is found and move forward. Patricia
Hi Darlene, I find this practice does work with challenging students. Whenever challenging students are made to feel important, things generally flow a lot smoother. Patricia
