I intend to use empathetic vocabulary when listening to students concerns. Following up with a similar story to add understanding and connection.
The role playing of a crisis situation is spot on. Getting mental run-throughs is a great way to feel prepared when a real crisis does arise. Even though its imaginary at first, the students will have real experience in working under perceived pressure. Ive seen this work in many fields.
Allowing all the students to be "kids" seems perfect. Who doesn't like playing games or winning a pizza party etc.
Understanding individual intrinsic motivations is KEY to being able to speak their language. For example, "those of you with growing children, won't have them at home forever. Your goals need to surpass being a parent to home aged children"
