About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Hi Hilary, Good plan to get yourself moving. Look for little ways you can use to get yourself moving. Think if it like a bird on the edge of the nest. Fly away from the lectern a little bit then fly back to it, then a little further and before you know it you will be moving all over the place. Gary

The Learning Environment Effect

Hi Janet, Good discussion about the learning environment. You didn't go a stray with your example of your step daughter. We move toward what we focus on and your advice about being in a medical environment is good. By being in such an environment she will see how she can fit into such a setting and will move toward the preparation needed to do such. By staying out of the environment it will much easier to talk about it without making moves to make it a reality. Gary

I am like you in that there are certain classrooms that do not lend themselves to learning. Even though I have to teach in them I find that I have to work harder to keep the students engaged since the environment doesn't support comfort and engagement. Gary

Clarifying Your Expectations To Students

Hi Leslie, You are right about needing to keep information flowing to students throughout the course. They often don't listen at key times or just wait until it is crunch time before they feel they need the information. I am a big fan of sharing the grading rubrics with students. This not only informs them but also reduces the complaints because they have known all along how they will be graded and where the points are going to be earned. Gary
