About me

I am an Education Advisor/Consultant for MaxKnowledge. I write courses that assist in the professional development of career college instructors. These courses range in content from the introductory level to advanced instructional development. I started my teaching career as an instructional technology teacher on the high school level, completed graduate school and then moved into higher education. I spent many years in the area of teacher training at the University of Nebraska. While at the University of Nebraska I stared working with career college instructors to improve their instructional delivery skills. As a result of these experiences I have been a consultant to career colleges throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries.

Activity

Hi Carrie, The practice quizzes I know really help the students with expectations. They know the format of how they will be assessed in the coming weeks. Helps to reduce some of their fears and stress. Gary
Hi Stephanie, This is a great way to call attention to upcoming events and deadlines. It also helps them get settled into the course as you mentioned. Gary
Hi Susan, Good point. We have to keep our references current even if it means learning "stuff" that we don't really see as being relevant to our personal lives. Gary
Hi Susan, Well stated. Safety in all aspects needs to be considered when setting up a classroom. There are three components to every class for students, social, how they interact with other students, cognitive, the mental processing that needs to occur and physical, the use of large and small muscles to do certain tasks. Having an understanding of how these three components interact for each student is important for classroom/lab planning. Gary
Hi Sarah, It is amazing how just the arrangement of the chairs for different learning opportunities can make such a big different with students. Your using the different arrangements lets you students know what type of class they can expect when you have them set in certain ways. Gary
Hi Rachel, Exactly. Get to the point and share useable information that will help them progress toward their career goals. That is what adult learners want from their education. Gary
Hi Alicia, I use a similar method only I use 3x5 cards. The students fill them out after major assignments and projects giving me feedback on the quality of the assignment and the value they got from it. They also comment on how the course is going. This way I can keep my finger on the pulse of the class and make changes as needed. I think many instructors use methods like this to stay on top of the class and the needs within it. Gary
Hi Ryan, Great examples of professional development. I wish you the best in your instructional delivery efforts. Gary
Discussion Comment
Hi Evan, Right you are. This is when it is fun to be a teacher because you get to be creative to find ways to bring their interest back. I always look for this challenge because that way I don't become bored with teaching the same course over and over. Gary
Hi Marianna, You are bringing an excellent mix to the classroom with all that you are doing. This should keep the students interested and engaged with the variety that is being offered. Gary
